An old trunk provides a great place to store everything from quilts to off season clothing – unless it has a musty smell. Anything stored inside would certainly absorb the bad odor. It is necessary to get rid of the problem before keeping it in the house let alone using it for storage purposes. Use these natural ways to get rid of a musty smell in an old trunk, and make it a useful home furnishing that will not drive people away.

Use Dry Ground Coffee to Get Rid of the Musty Smell

Dry coffee grounds have the natural ability to absorb and completely get rid of a musty smell in an old trunk or any other enclosed location that does not have moisture issues. Place an open container of freshly ground coffee beans inside of the old trunk. Close the lid and leave it there for at least 48 hours. It will get rid of the musty smell. However, it will temporarily smell like coffee. Leave the old trunk open to air it out, and use the coffee in the garden as a natural fertilizer. Nothing is throw away!

Place a Bowl of White Vinegar Inside the Old Trunk

Another fantastic natural product that will work to get rid of a musty smell in an old trunk is white vinegar. Partially fill a shallow bowl with white vinegar, and carefully place it inside. Close the lid and leave the vinegar in place for at least 48 hours. It will work to get rid of the musty smell. Use some of it as a natural sink and fixture cleaner. It will remove hard water stains. Pour the rest down the drain along with a little baking soda. It will work as a natural drain cleaner. Best of all, you will get rid of the musty smell in your old trunk.

Use Crumpled Newsprint to Get Rid of the Musty Smell

Black and white newsprint is highly absorbent, and it will work to neutralize and get rid of a musty smell in an old trunk. Crumple up several pieces of black and white newsprint, and place it inside. Leave it in the musty old trunk for at least 3 days. It should get rid of the odor. Use the sheets of newsprint to clean dirty glass. It will work when completely dry to clean and shine windows inside and out. Otherwise, be sure to recycle it.

Store Real Cedar Cubes Inside the Old Trunk

After you fully get rid of the musty smell in your old trunk, store it in a dry location that has low humidity. Place natural cedar cubes or shavings inside of the old trunk. They will add a clean fresh scent. If natural shavings are used, put them in the leg of an old pair of panty hose. The hosiery will hold all of the shavings inside while allowing the natural smell of cedar to waft into the trunk.
